Data Engineer


As a member of the Data Engineering team, you will design, build and manage Big Data infrastructure and tools. You will be owning part of the data platform that enables performing complex analytics and reporting efficiently and reliably.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement and maintain efficient and reliable data pipelines to move data across systems
  • Collaborate with multiple teams (product, analytics, finance, engineering etc) in high visibility roles to implement data workflow and own the solution end-to-end
  • Design and develop new systems and tools in a number of languages (from Python to JavaScript) to facilitate effective data consumption
  • Implement data workflow to aggregate and structure data for high-performance analytics
  • Monitor performance of the data platform and optimize as needed
  • Evaluate, benchmark and integrate latest big data tools and technologies

Desired Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years of software development experience
  • 2+ years of experience in ELT design, implementation and maintenance
  • Experience with data pipeline configuration, example: Luigi, Google Dataflow.
  • Experience with Cloud based Data Warehousing solution GCP BigQuery or AWS Redshift
  • Experience with at least one scripting language (ex: Python), one Object Oriented language (ex: Java). Knowledge of at least one Functional language like Scala will be a plus
  • Experience with at least on NoSQL database, e.g. Cassandra, MongoDB, HBase
  • System administration and automation skills will be plus
  • Able to communicate complex concepts clearly and accurately
  • Willingness to learn new technologies, tools and approaches to problem-solving

Data Scientist


Here’s where you would come in: identify and formalize problems predicting user behavior. Then create and implement your models to find solutions. Be innovative, be creative, use every bit of that key commodity – data.

We will rely on you to communicate your findings to your peers – both technical and non-technical. Your solutions will need to be demonstrably impactful and visual.

We would like you to be able to:

  • Work with large amounts of data
  • Identify opportunities that would help improve the experience eCommerce website visitors have
  • Apply predictive modeling techniques for a variety of user modeling tasks
  • Work closely with engineering team to design, test, verify and implement statistical models
  • Design and evaluate novel approaches to experiments for online shopping
  • Recognize that sometimes (If not most times) the simple solution is the best solution

Desired Skills and Experience

We love candidates who have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Math, Statistics, Economics, Astrophysics or other quantitative field; Masters or PhD strongly preferred
  • At least 2 + years of experience working with some or all of the following: probability, statistics, data mining, predictive modeling, experimental design, computational analytics, econometric modeling
  • Fluency in SQL
  • Fluency in some or all of the following: R, Python, Spark (Or equivalent)
  • An ability to work independently to get an idea from inception to implementation, including knowledge of techniques for validation and A/B testing
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Comfort working effectively in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities
  • Comfort collaborating effectively across departments: engineers, product managers, analysts, business, and marketing functions
  • A scrappy, action-driven ability to work autonomously
  • Highly developed skills in data visualization

An experienced platform engineer who is passionate about designing, creating and delivering highly scalable distributed services. You will be actively involved in designing and implementing features as well as internal infrastructure.

  • Research, prototype and verify software solutions that overcome technical boundaries
  • Architect the right kinds of flexibility to fuel growth, optionality and sustainability
  • Develop back end services and product facing features

  • Contribute to refining and improving our processes around service development and deployment as Tumblr becomes more service oriented

What We’re Looking For:

  • 3-5 years of relevant industry experience
  • A track record of solving problems and getting things done
  • Strong proficiency with algorithms and data structures
  • Experience successfully managing large amounts of data and/or high throughput on distributed systems
  • Professional experience with low-level optimizing, tuning and debugging for performance
  • Top-notch expertise in at least one relevant technology
  • Highly productive developer in Java, C++ or similar, with functional programming experience
  • Scala and Akka experience strongly preferred but not essential
  • Someone willing and able to work in a tightly integrated team, contribute to reviews and design discussions
